Designer Spotlight:Nikki Garcia

I recently had the chance to Interview young  San Francisco Designer Nikki Garcia, about her recent lookbook shoot and also her line. Here are some of the questions and also Lookbook Images.
-Where are you from?
I grew up in Portland, Oregon
-Did you go to school for design?
I did my undergrad at the University of Montana in business and photography, and afterward moved to SF to study fashion design at FIDM
-What do you think about the surge of new designers , within the last few years?
I think there are a lot of really creative artists emerging all the time, designers that are not trying to follow runway trends, and are using design as expression. Clothing design is fairly new for me, and it is inspiring to see independent designers who are not afraid to try new things and are making a name for themselves .
-Where does your inspiration come from?
All over. Everything I observe, experiences I have had, getting outside, thrifting, streetstyle, different design websites….something will catch my eye, or lots of things, and ideas will start to form and as I sketch or just start pinning up fabric the ideas take shape and I can go forward with the pieces. Usually I have a general idea of the mood and shape, and I let everything go in that direction.
-I saw you recent lookbook images and immediately thought the modern day Stevie Nicks with a twist, tell me a little about the shoot.
We did the shoot at Drawbridge Ghost Town, which has a really amazing history of  hunt clubs and brothels and basically lawlessness. The town began to sink so everyone left, but there are some really amazing structures there, and it really feels in the middle of nowhere, it’s not manicured or maintained like a lot of ghost towns that have become tourist destinations. I liked the idea of these really modern and structured, black pieces in the middle of the old wood houses and overgrown grass. My friend Dylan Ozanich shot all the photos, and we had some really great models involved. The photos turned out exactly as I wanted, they are a little moody and
dark.
If any questions related to Nikki’s line please shoot her an email:

Designer Micaela Ezra was born in Sidney, and after finishing school she came to the States to pursue her dream of being a designer.

While most fresh-out-of-school college students may feel that they will get a job right off the bat that pays 60K a year, Micaela knew that a little work may be required before achieving her goals. So, just after arriving in Manhattan, she set out knocking on doors, and she so happened to knock on the door at Cynthia Steffe, who was willing to give her a job based on the talent displayed in her portfolio, as well as her keen knowledge of textile design. As soon as she got the job, she packed up and left Sydney.

What more does a  child need besides a good education and a fabulous pair of shoes based on simple silhouettes and fun, trendy prints?

For those kids who can hardly afford their number 2 pencils come fall, proceeds from Study Footwear,  a mass market sneaker line— about $50 a pair and sold at Foot Action, moxsie.com,  go into producing Study-branded school supplies (notebooks, pencils, erasers, etc) which are then given back to kids who need them.

Busy mom and super star actress Shirly Brener may be busy, but she always looks drop dead gorgeous! Her classic sense of style from the streets to the red carpet got our attention here at Forward Fashion, and we are honored to have her answer a few of our questions on being a successful actress,  style, Israel, and Hollywood.

FF:  How does it feel to become another character, do you feel like the costumes add to your ability to become this person?
Shirly Brener:    Turning into other characters is part of any acting job. The real challenge is to find yourself in each of those roles, or if the character is far off from you, do enough research and find things such as manner of talk, way of walk, props, costume, hair, etc that  make you feel and behave as this person.

In Righteous Kill, working with two of the greatest legends of cinematic history and together in the same film in and together in the same scenes with me added to my ability to become the character. The whole team of producers, director (Jon Avnet- “Fried Green Tomatoes”), other cast of A list people and the high budget all made it super lucrative.

When I first met Minh Collins at a party on the West Side, we spoke about what it takes to be a true go-getter in this world and particularly, in the world of Hollywood. Although Forward Fashion is technically a fashion publication, we always love to branch out to other industries that the fashion industry works alongside with every day. Our publication is always seeking out the ‘movers and shakers,’ if you will, and in the film industry, Mr. Collins is definitely one of them.

We’ve seen her on TV and can’t help but be intrigued by her overwhelming sense of star power, and not to mention her fabulous hair.

The Forward Fashion team happened to cross paths with Ms. Brig Van Osten one night in Los Angeles, and were invited to tour her salon in Simi Valley. After what Brig warned us was a trip that we would need “a horse, and an over-night pack complete with food and change of clothes,” in order to make it, we did make it!

Most 12 year old Americans live nice on nice streets, eat McDonalds Happy Meals, and are driven to soft ball practice in mini vans. Naida Begeta, the creative force behind Kao Pao Shu, was only 12 when war broke out in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. After enduring three years of turbulence in her homeland, Naida was presented with the opportunity to study in Washington as part of the Fellowship of Reconciliation project when she was 15. She describes her life to be a lot like her art: diverse, creative and inspiring.

Society For Rational Dress

I developed a slight obsession with the brand Society For Rational Dress after obtaining a pair of brown distressed leather riding boots from the brand about 3 years ago.  An experience which had opened my eyes to the unknown and untamed, being mesmerized with the forward-ness that the designs encompassed.  It is not so often that you can go into a store and find what you are looking, when that for which you are seeking  has yet to hit any sense of recognition in these global markets of trend zombie’s.
